Get Back to Your Roots

By Steve the Voice - Posted on July 01 2009

This weekend, one of the wildest, most unpredictable and unprecedented shows is hitting the sweet summer stage at Burlington's Waterfront Park. The Roots, who have been named by Rolling Stone as one of the top 20 greatest live acts in the world (the world, son!) are hitting the Green Mountain State to help us celebrate the region's 400th birthday.

You would think that with becoming the house band for The Jimmy Fallon Show in March of this year would slow touring down. You would be horribly wrong and should be browbeaten for thinking this. The Roots have been touring non-stop, and have even started a weekly series (The Roots Present: The Jam) at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. The Jam features members of the band along with special surprise guests like Talib Kweli and Corey Glover. Over their celebrated career, they've backed Iggy Pop, Dave Mattews Band and Jay-Z (Unplugged as well as his final show at MSG).

In short, they're nasty. As a hip hop act, they're almost an anomaly as they're all experienced, wildy talented musicians who focus on instrumentation and a message of community and identity. Check them out as the sun sets over Lake Champlain on Sunday, July 5th at Waterfront Park in Burlington. For tickets, hit up FlynnTix.org or show up at the show on Sunday.
